LINUS

Linus skulked behind Colby as he led Matilda down the sidewalk. He ducked behind a tree when Colby turned to look behind him. After a second, Colby continued down the sidewalk.

Linus crept out from behind the tree and hurried to a large bush in the neighbor’s yard. He leapt behind it when Colby turned around again.

“Linus, I can see you. Just get up here and walk with me.”

Dag nab it. He’d been hoping he could pull off another goat-napping—ahem—goat borrowing. Although he hadn’t been able to come up with a plan that would get both him and Matilda away from Colby, especially when Colby would just go back to the Inn and find them. As far as plans went, it needed some serious work.

Linus attempted another tactic. “But Colby, we don’t have to take her back. I love her! Look at how happy she is with us.”

Colby’s look didn’t make Linus hopeful. “This is what’s known as a teachable moment, Linus. She doesn’t belong to you, so we’re taking her back.”

“Teachable moment. Meh meh meh.”

“I can hear you.” Colby didn’t bother stopping as Linus stomped along beside him.

Matilda bleated.

“I know, Matilda,” Linus said forlornly. “He’s so mean. He didn’t even compliment you on your jingle bell harness or your sweater.”

Colby’s sigh shook the branches of the evergreen tree on the corner.

“He’s so dramatic,” Linus whispered to Matilda. “I thought lawyers were supposed to be serious.”

She bleated her agreement.

Colby stopped and turned to face him. “Linus, Matilda looks gorgeous in her sweater. I love that she’s jingling all the way back to the nativity where she belongs looking so beautiful. There. Is that good enough for you?”

“Well, I wouldn’t say it’s a glowing review, but I suppose we’ll take it, right Matilda?”

Matilda took the chance to snack on one of the lowest tree branches since they weren’t moving. She didn’t really seem impressed by Colby’s praise, though. “So much for lawyers making convincing arguments. When you can’t even convince a goat….”

The weird vein on Colby’s forehead popped out again. Linus made a mental note to talk to Miles about it. It was certainly worrying Linus every time it appeared. It would be nice to talk to the new doctor in the family to make sure it wasn’t anything serious.

“Come along, Matilda,” Colby said.

He gave her leash a gentle tug, encouraging her to follow him. She jingled along beside him down the sidewalk toward town square, not realizing Colby was ruining their plans for the perfect pyre.

Linus huffed and hurried to catch up. Their appearance drew a lot of attention as they approached the circle in the center of town. Linus waved at everyone who stared. They smiled and waved back.

“I think they’re admiring your sweater,” Linus said. “It really is cheerful. Look at all the smiles you’re getting.”

“Or it could be that the goat I’m walking on a reindeer-worthy jingle bell leash through downtown Mistletoe Falls has a matching sweater to mine. I mean, I could be wrong, but that certainly seems like something that would draw this many stares.
